Mint Juleps are traditionally served in a pre-chilled stainless steel, silver or pewter cup metal frosts more easily than glass when the ice is rapidly stirred thus keeping the drink optimally chilled and creating the beautiful frosty look.
The main ingredients are: Bourbon, mint, sugar (simple syrup), crushed ice.
In the mint julep cup, muddle (or crush) the mint leaves with the simple syrup and whiskey. 6-7 firm presses is enough. Be careful not to "over-muddle". Fill cup 3/4 of the way with crushed ice.
Any spearmint plant will work. It harmonizes nicely with both the sugar and the bourbon. An interesting fact is there is one variety of spearmint named "Kentucky Colonel", as a bow to the Kentucky Derby tradition.
